How 20 Year Old Kenyan Is Generating Millions of Money
For most 20-year olds, working in the stock market is only a pipe dream. This is, however, not the case for one Fred Mwireri, whose daily routine involves rubbing shoulders with some of the country’s top investment bankers and generating millions in revenue for clients.
Mwireri attributes his meteoric progression in the financial sector to his steely determination and a good turn of fortune that aided in funding his secondary school education as he comes from a humble background.
The actuarial science student from Dedan Kimathi University, who is currently interning at brokerage firm Kingdom Securities Limited in Nairobi, says that his golden pathway in investment banking was nearly curtailed when he almost missed out on secondary school education despite scoring an impressive 384 marks in his KCPE exams in 2009.
“Even though I am the first from my family to complete primary school education, I was afraid I would miss out on secondary school education and wondered how I would overcome this obstacle,” Fred explains.
However, his despair was short-lived after he gained a scholarship from the Co-operative Bank Foundation and enrolled to Form One at Nkubu High School. The scholarship funded his tuition fees, uniforms, and books and saw him attain a grade of A- in his KCSE exam.
The Co-operative Bank Foundation offers 420 secondary school scholarships to bright but financially disadvantaged students from all over the country. Almost 4800 students have benefited from the program since it was founded in 2007.
Mwireri added that were it not for the foundation, which has also catered for his university education, he would otherwise not have attained his education.
A total of 140 of the best performing students countrywide have also benefitted from university scholarships courtesy of the Co-operative Foundation.
Mwireri entered the financial industry immediately after completing his secondary school education when he interned at the Co-operative Bank and has amassed vital experience, ideal for his future success.
Away from the demanding financial life, Mwireri cools off through singing (Chris Brown songs), travelling and reading novels.
